continued from san juan del sur HOME Program aims to make whole region free of illiteracy San Juan del Sur has been a municipality that aspires to be free from the phenomena of Illiteracy. We are committed to a new task, one that drives us to wish better things. If you can read this article, give thanks to a teacher. On April 17th 2006, San Juan del Sur was the 55th municipality to join the National Program “Yo, Sí Puedo”. This program has been met with much enthusiasm by people that desire to read or read better. This social program is headed by the Office of the Mayor of San Juan Del Sur, The Ministry of Education and the Community Medical Services. The program works through an Municipal Council against Illiteracy, integrated by State Institutions, NGO`s, workers organization, and the San Juan del Sur Municipal development committee. Up to March 2007, the program has been able teach 224 illiterate people in San Juan del Sur, distributed between the rural and urban zone. We have been able to declare 7 towns in the San Juan del Sur region, free of illiteracy. by that we mean less than 5% are illiterate (a figure set by UNESCO). We are now starting the 5th phase (stage) in that we want to be able to declare the whole of the San Juan del Sur region free of illiteracy and are working in 23 communities on the very difficult task of reaching that goal. We can only think about doing this in the communities without power because of the generous donations of electric generators from: Hotel Villa Isabella, Hotel Pelican Eyes, and Compañía Azucarera del Sur, (CASUR Potosí). Everybody can be a star in the noble purpose of putting an end to If you want to make a donation to the program you can contact us at:
