A Big Birthday Helps the Police

Saturday night, June 2, Big Wave Daves hosted the Hawaii 5-0 party to celebrate Del Sur's editor and publisher Kelvin Marshall’s 50th birthday and help raise funds for the local police department.

Marshall, who has been in San Juan del Sur for the last eight months, chose to use his birthday event as a fundraiser to “help out” the local police. There are numerous vehicles that have been donated to the department that now need repair, However; there is no money in the budget for repairs and replacements for donated vehicles.

The event raised $250. (Two hundred on the night with a further $50 being donated from other persons) “It should be enough to buy a couple of batteries, mufflers and the sprockets and chain required to get at least two or three of the currently parked vehicles driveable”.

Bar-B-Que Gives Rosa and Family New Hope

Once again the community of San Juan del Sur showed a big heart and reached into their pockets when Kati, Patricia, and Jessica from Marie’s Bar held a fundraiser for their Mother, Rosa Centeno who needed medicine to complete the second phase of her chemotherapy treatment.

On the night, Greg Bamford (Mango Rosa Resort) lit up his giant stainless steel grill and all those who attended (which was pretty much an equal mix of visitors and locals) enjoyed a feast of various cuts of barbequed meats with salads and baked potatoes.

Over $1,500 was raised and when I spoke to the family before print, the medicine was already on its way back to SJDS.

Kati, Patricia and Jessica and the rest of the family would like to thank everyone for their generosity.

Art in the Park

The first annual “Art in the Park” was held on Saturday the 26th of May at the Central Park.

DHL were a major sponsor of the event providing 150 T shirts, 250 hot dogs as well as tents and promotional materials. Employees from Hotel Pelican Eyes…Piedras y Olas, the Alcaldia and DHL set up and took down the tents and displays.

Other attractions complimenting the art displays were water colour classes by Valerie (El Jardin), face painting – Dana (Re/Max), mosaic classes by Kelly of Gato Negro. Claire, Patricia and Walter helped out everywhere.

A big thanks to the family and staff of the Internationally Famous “Chicken Lady” who cooked and served the hot dogs. Luis Contreras (Computer Geeks) cooked up a whole pig and Edward Sheehey (Computer Geeks) helped at the beer tent sponsored by Big Wave Daves.

The entire event was coordinated by Emma Holenstein of Stones and Waves Veterinary Clinic. And a big thank you to anyone we missed.
