LOCAL SURFERS UP IN ARMS The construction of a “Viewpoint” that goes out 63 metres to sea at Playa Yankee has local surfers and environmentalists furious. The Nicaragua Surf Report crew and staff at Arena Caliente along with numerous local surfers, who first realized what was going on, are hotter than a pre rainy season day in SJDS. Marlon Mora, (a local surfer) asked “Why does this need to be built?”, “Why can’t something down here just be left natural like it has been for generations?” Local surfers believe that the pier has the potential to ruin the beach for surfing. As you can see in the Nicaragua Surf Report picture above, the line of rebar posts indicates the foundation of the pier structure heading straight towards one of the local surfers favourite waves. The plan calls for a wooden pier supported by 28 pairs of pilings that go down 2 metres. The pier itself will be 63 metres long and nearly 3 metres wide. Even though they agree that the project has permission from MARENA (the Government department looking after such approvals), the surfers believe that it still could be possible to stop it going ahead by writing a short letter describing the importance of this beach and the impact its loss would have.
