continued from home page We all have to work together to make sure that San Juan stays an incredibly beautiful, interesting, and friendly place to live. This is the main objective of a new organization called Comunidad Connect. Comunidad Connect grew out of its predecessor El Puente by expanding its focus on intercultural collaboration and public awareness to include community program management, volunteer coordination, and fundraising for local economic development projects. By linking available resources and goodwill with specific needs of the community, Comunidad Connect adds to the sustainable development of the municipality and brings together locals and foreigners creating a friendlier and more inclusive atmosphere. The current projects led by Comunidad Connect include the renovation of the town basketball court located half a block south of BDF bank. When finished the recreation facility will feature a newly resurfaced basketball/soccer court with new baskets and goals, bleachers, bathrooms, and urban style artwork from local artists. Feel free to stroll by to see the progress. In collaboration with the Alcaldia, Comunidad Connect is launching a recycling program. The initial focus will be on plastic bottles and bags with other non-organic and organic materials to be included later. A processing center will be located at the town dump heading north towards Chocolata, so start saving those recyclables. Last but by no means least, Comunidad Connect in collaboration with Coldwell Banker Nicaragua, is proud to announce the creation of Community RE-Fund. This initiative is funded by donations coming from companies and individuals involved in real estate (thus the RE) transactions. The money is then split between a small business development program and community based projects. In both cases the idea is to build individual, family, and community assets to create a self-sufficient, economically viable, and cohesive community. This initiative is gaining a lot of momentum and is already supported nationally by the Institute of Tourim and the Asociation of Nicaraguan Investors and Developers. Locally it is supported by the Alcaldia and all of the major real estate agencies. The funding of several community projects has been started including the construction of a To learn more about Comunidad Connect projects and about how you can contribute sweat or cash contact Jon Thompson or Roman Yavich at comunidadconnect@gmail.com Back to San Juan Del Sur News home
