Six pangas that are used by local fishermen in San Juan del Sur will be fitted out as “water taxis” to provide services for tourists in San Juan. Financing of “Project Reef” is being provided by the Local Rural Development (Decosur-IDR) program and the Mayors Office of San Juan del Sur as well as the Association of Pangas and Divers.

The idea is to give some panga owners an opportunity to look at other revenue sources, given that the fishing is not as good as it was. They can use these boats for both functions. The re-furbishing of the pangas has been taking place on the dock with help from the fishing fishing terminal. When the sun/rain awnings and safety equipment arrive, these six pangas will be ready to take tourists fishing or on trips in and around San Juan del Sur for about US$35 an hour.
