A big complaint from the many honest customers of Union Fenosa (Nicaragua’s private power company) has always been the issue of people stealing electricity by way of illegal hook-ups. At the same time, Union Fenosa has often been criticized (from as high up as President Daniel Ortega) for not providing a quality service.

The Government is working on a plan that will enable them to enforce the law regarding the theft or “abstraction” of electricity, providing that Union Fenosa invests some US$30-million to upgrade the current system. The plan is to seek non custodial sentences (fines and restitution) for theft of less than 999 kilowatts per month and jail time for stealing more than 1000kws. (6 months to 5 years, depending on the case).
