March 1st & 2nd was the first surf contest of the year here in Nicaragua, “The Circuito Nacional de Surf” sponsored by Dollar Rent a Car and Claro. We had great waves for the competition at Playa Maderas, however a strong offshore winds and colder than normal water temps challenged the competitors.

Day One
Young Rex "La Bestia" Calderon (left) is last year’s National Champion and easily made it past the opening rounds in both the Open National and Junior Categories. In the surprise upset of the Nationals category, Augusto "La Gaviota" Chamorro failed to advance past the second round at his home break. He had a good first round and was surfing pretty well but just couldn't catch the high scoring waves in the second round.

There were a couple of surfers from Limon and Las Salinas who surfed well. Melkis "El Buitre" Sanchez made it to the third round into the Nationals. Rodolfo "Calibilly" Zapata made it to the third round into the Nationals and to the semifinal into the Juniors.

Darwin "El Cabucho" Jacamo was excited to participate in this contest because he got to surf with all the the local SJDS surfers and he made it to the semifinal in the juniors contest.

"El Mope" Miranda was up against 3 of the best surfers from San Juan del Sur in the second round. This was a very tight heat with Oliver “El Monito” Solis and La Polita trying to advance into the next round. In the end it was "El Monito" and "El Mope" who put on a fine display of surfing and made it to Sunday’s third round.

Jamil "El Cerrucho" Amador from Popoyo was in the right spot and caught a couple of the day’s best set waves and advanced easily to day two. Luis "La Baloy" Chamorro didn't have a great first round but kept getting better little by little throughout the day. Luis advanced to the third round as well. One of the other guys who made it to the third round into the national from Limon was Mario "El Danino" Martinez.

Norwin "El Chulin" Pecaminoso was charging on day one, getting some good size waves. With his diminutive stature, El Chulin has the advantage of making even the smallest waves look big to the judges. He will be up against his good friend Larry “Carita de Venado" in the semifinal into the junior heats. In other news, Samir "El Peluchito" Duarte made it to the third round too and the said is that he is going to participate in the next Central American Contest in Panama instead of our friend Gustavo Noguerra.

Day Two:
The second and final day of the contest at Maderas brought a lighter winds, warmer water and smaller but well-shaped waves.
This was our first Maderas contest with good swell in the water for both days. Machete pt was going off with this swell even though it wasn't part of the competition. Maybe we can take better advantage of this wave for the next contest at Maderas.

Zamir "El Peluchito" Duarte wanted to be the first surfer from Popoyo to win a contest out here at Maderas and was doing the best to win it.
But Luis "La Baloy" Chamorro wasn’t having any of that. “Samir will never win a contest at Maderas as long as I’m still surfing here” noted Luis.
Yesterday Augusto "La Gaviota" Chamorro was upset and didn’t make it to the third round in the National Category. Today he got back to the action determined to win the International contest and this time he redeemed himself by making it into the finals with his brother "La Baloy", "El Mope" and Chris from Popoyo.

The big surprise of the contest was Joel "El Capuyito" Chavez from Astillero (Below). At only 11 years old, he made it to the Juniors final with maneuvers like this one against "La Bestia" Calderon from San Juan del Sur, "El Brujo" Jacamo from Limon and Cesar "El Enamo" Amador from Popoyo. Watch out for El Capuyito – he’s likely to be our next up-and-comer.
Making it into the final in the National contest was "El Danino" Martinez from Limon, "La Baloy" Chamorro from San Juan del Sur, "El Peluchito" Duarte from Popoyo and Young Rex "La Bestia" Calderon from San Juan del Sur all trying to win the national title.
