SJdS is a “Jewel in the Crown” beach destination and a “must visit” for many tourists. It is also a favourite spot for “Semana Santa” (Easter Week) when thousands of Nicaraguans flock to the town to enjoy their annual vacation.

The plan, which is collaboration between the Municipal Council, the National Police and the Ministry of Health, is aimed at guaranteeing the safety and security of visitors as well as addressing issues such as temporary vendors and bars, parking and garbage removal. A team of 120 police officers from the Policia Nacional as well as members of the newly trained Tourist Police (see page 8), will be on duty twenty four hours a day to ensure the plan is effective. The Fire Department, with tanker, will be ready for any problems that should occur. An 18 person unit of The Department of Civil Defence will also be on hand working with the other groups in the event of any emergency situations arising.


MINSA, the Ministry of Health has the responsibility of providing 20 personnel, including 3 Doctors. The Nicargauan Red Cross has been asked to provide 12 people for first aid duties.

In order to to help control the free movement of people and traffic, temporary businesses will be limited to specially designated areas and any unauthorized vendors risk having their merchandise seized. Parking will also be regulated and illegally parked vehicles will be towed away.
The estimated cost of this years plan is 1.4 million Córdoba’s, (about 200.000 more than last year). The local municipality will contribute 800.000 Córdoba’s to the plan with other contributions coming from vehicle tolls and donations from companies such as Flor de Cana.
