With the financial support of Pelican Eyes Piedras y Olas, DED, (a German inter-governmental organization), the active participation of the Mayor’s office of San Juan del Sur and Fundacion A. Jean Brugger, the Municipal Recycling Program is well under way. Comunidad Connect will administer the year-long pilot project and then pass complete control over to the Alcadia.

Phase one of the pilot project, which has already started, has five municipal workers separating plastic at the dump on the Chocolata road, which is then sold to a collections depot and the profits are reinvested.

Phase two adds worm castings and organic composting to the project, in order to produce top-soil, which will be available for sale in about 3 months. The third phase focuses on an educational campaign to promote awareness and encourage separation of recyclable materials at home and at work, as well as a plant nursery which will use the top-soil from the composting process and will sell plants to the public towards the end of 2008.

The success of this project depends on the participation of the entire San Juan del Sur community. Please put plastic coke and shampoo bottles, as well as aluminum and glass in separate bags. This will make it much easier for the workers at the dump to sort through the trash. We are working with the Alcaldia to create a schedule for picking up sorted trash. Within a month we will be asking you to separate your organic kitchen waste as well, to be used in composting.

The future of San Juan del Sur depends on sustainable resource management and the united action of the residents of this municipality. Please do not hesitate to contact Roman Yavich and Comunidad Connect with any suggestions or questions at; roman@ComunidadConnect.org
