Brother and sister Salvador and Katia Cardenal started off their singing career as teenagers. Later, working with the post Somoza Government's Literacy Campaign, they found themselves in rural Nicaragua teaching their fellow countrymen to read. It was this contact with their people and their country that inspired the musical messages they now deliver.

Duo Guardabarranco’s harmonious lyrics quickly established them as part of Latin America’s socially conscious "Nueva Cancion" (meaning New Song) culture. They have sung on stage with Silvio Rodriguez, Bruce Cockburn and Melissa Etheridge to name but a few. Their first English-language recording was the Pete Seeger song, "You'll Sing to Me, Too" which you can find on the album If I Had a Song: The Songs of Pete Seeger, Vol. 2. They were the only Latin American artists on that compilation which also featured artists such as Jackson Browne, Joan Baez, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg and Arlo Guthrie.

Jon Thompson, (Fundacion A. Jean Brugger) told me that it was the most successful concert to date. He said “We will be doing more concerts like this throughout the year. The capacity crowd from the diverse community of San Juan del Sur deserves a huge round of applause for coming out to support Fundacion A. Jean Brugger”.

He added “We are dedicating concert proceeds to our school uniform project, Galería del Sur (Art Gallery), and a new initiative to sponsor teachers in the rural communities of San Juan del Sur”.
What a wonderful circle of giving. Two rural teachers, turned entertainers, help raise money to sponsor rural teachers. It doesn’t get much better than that!
