Carlos came up from Costa Rica with the dual purpose of generating interest in live music in SjdS and with a bigger goal, his dream of someday putting on a music festival here in SJdS. Warming up and checking the sound and equipment, Carlos looked every bit the performer. He backed that visual up with a consummate performance of classic songs in both English and Spanish, including a few he had written himself. Carlos, a Uruguayan, now living in Costa Rica, (via Canada) is passionate about his work. “Music is my life” he told the audience. He put on his one man show at Big Wave Daves Bar & Restaurant for free with sponsorship for room and board coming from Big Wave Daves, Nica Geeks, Del Sur Newsletter and The Landmark Inn on the Playa.

Jam Session

The following night Carlos headed up a jam session with local musicians. The “Band” (who had all met about a half an hour prior) played as though they had been together for 20 years. Tim Webster finally had a reason to get his drum kit out of moth balls, Scott #1, complete with a big fat Cuban (cigar) was his usual “cool” and looked at home on a high stool strumming his bass guitar. Scott #2 provided the icing on the cake when he walked in the bar, nonchalantly assembled his saxophone, casually strolled up next to Carlos and backed up the opening number (Knockin’ on Heavens Door) with some sax rifts that delighted the crowd. If you were a tourist, you would be forgiven for thinking that this newly formed quartet was the house band.

Carlos came here to make a musical impression and stir up some support for live music in SJdS. Judging from the reaction of the crowd, and the comments made after the show, it was pretty much “mission accomplished”.
