His team will now go on to the next level. As I write this article, I’m sure he’s somewhere celebrating their victory. Alejandro immediately impresses one as a solid and friendly person, the type of person who takes things seriously but knows how to enjoy life. Alejandro began playing baseball in his neighborhood, Barrio Barberena at 10. By 13, he was playing in the local leagues. When he was 17, Doña Marta Isabel Barrios and Don Eduardo Holmann told him baseball could be more than a hobby for him. If he wanted it, it could be a job and a future. They found him a
sports scholarship in Managua. He says Doña Barrios is one of
his heroes for helping him. His other is Roberto Clemente, a Major League
Baseball player from Puerto Rico, who won the National League’s
MVP Award in 1966, and died in a plane crash in 1972 while delivering
aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Alejandro says, “When you are outside of your country you can not act with the same authority or liberty that you can in your own country”. El Perron’s advice to young players or any one is this, “Baseball is a stage of your life while you’re young. Many players don’t study because they’re too interested in the moment. You can’t be that way. Discipline. Without discipline talent can not pass through frontiers and barriers.” Currently Alejandro works with Communidad Connect as the administrator and coordinator of the new San Juan Sports Park. He is also finishing his thesis. As a final piece of advice, Alejandro offers, “One thing you have to understand is finish what you start. That’s the beautiful thing, that’s the triumph.” Appropriate words as El Perron and his team finish their winning season.
