continued from san juan del sur HOME Donation to Central Salud There are certain times you don’t want the electricity to go out. While in the middle of delivering a baby at the Central Salud is definitely one of them. But, it did. After the child was born, but before the placenta could be removed, darkness unexpectedly fell. While the doctor held the baby in the pitch-black room, a nurse ran down the hall to fetch a flashlight so they could proceed. This is one problem that will not happen again. Two new emergency lights with a two-hour battery charge have now been installed in the emergency and maternity rooms. Now those unplanned blackouts won’t leave the doctors in the dark. This new emergency lighting is just one of the many new items for Central Salud with the $3,500 donation from money raised from last years Panga Tournament. Other projects included repairs to wiring, plumbing and doors, new refrigerators freezers and moving walls to create new examination rooms. Luis Contreras of Nica Geeks and one of the principal organizers of last year’s tournament, coordinated the work and handled the funds for the project. He even got a kiss from the hospitals cook upon delivering the new refrigerator. “It feels great to give, but in reality it showed us how much they need” Luis added, “Many people around the world donate to Central Salud, but they are still lacking many of their basic needs”. Money from this years Panga Tournament is already earmarked for more of these basic needs, with the proceeds being shared between Central Salud and one school, yet to be determined.
