Panga tourney to raise money for local causes

The date has been set and the prep work has started for what is hoped to be the biggest and best tournament so far. Del Sur is pleased to be helping with the organisation and promotion of this year’s event, (last year, our first ever publication featured all the tourney results). This is an opportunity for the entire community to come out and support our fishermen, the community and enjoy all of the festivities.

Businesses and individual sponsors will be matched with local boats in the competition to see who can snag the biggest of six types of fish. As well, there will be prizes for the overall biggest fish and the biggest total catch. Pedro from “Radio Pollo” in the market will once again emcee the event and will come up with some prize categories of his own! Food and drink will be available, and, on sale will be the much coveted tournament T-Shirt. Incidentally, recently I saw someone wearing the 2nd annual shirt with about 5 sponsor’s names on the back. Last year we just about got them all on! So, it’s going to be a long sleeve ¨T¨ just in case we have to use the sleeves for more names!

Last years grand prize was a 30hp Yamaha outboard generously donated by AutoNica and was won by Team “El Reyo”, Guillermo Mendoza. In addition to paying for the tournament, the funds raised help local organizations. Last year, $3,500 was donated to Central Salud (The Clinic), $200 to the Policia Nacional who received a new printer and telephone, and $200 went to Stones and Waves veterinarian clinic.

What is a Panga?
For those readers not familiar with these boats, a Panga is a small, shallow V-hulled boat (like a skiff), open topped, with a pointed bow and a flat stern. In the right hands, they are a very safe boat. The usual size is somewhere between 20 and 30 feet long and they are often fitted with huge motors, up to 200hp, which can push the flat ¨planing hull¨ to well over 30 knots.
