Rescued foxes set free

Remember these cute little guys from the May 18th wildlife rescue at Remanso? After three months of care from Stones and Waves, Clinic and Pelican Eyes, Piedras y Olas, the two foxes were finally released into the wild.

With both animals only moments away from what was probably their first time out of captivity, a light rain started to fall on the farm off of Lake Nicaragua. Naturally they were a bit hesitant to leave their cage so Emma Holenstein of Stones and Waves and Henri Avendaño of Pelican Eyes along with Volunteer Annie Tenwick helped them on their way and both foxes leapt off into the bushes like a couple of gazelles.

To make sure the pair were ready to adapt to their new lives, Henri had been feeding the foxes live chickens so they could learn to hunt and get an appetite for fresh meat.

Foxes are generally a shy, timid animal that hunt alone. They eat anything from birds and insects to berries. Most foxes live two to three years.

Goodbye Stuart

“Brilliant!” is what Stuart Rooney recalled of the day he helped release animals from the Remanso Hotel. It was Stuart’s favorite memory of his 10-month stint as a volunteer with the Stones and Waves Peidras y Olas Veterinarian Clinic. “It was really satisfying.”

On a two-year trip around the world, Stuart spent the last part of it here in San Juan del Sur doing everything from vaccinating animals to castrating a Billy goat with the help of a 7-year-old local!. Not your normal travel experiences, but ones that Stuart will always remember.

Stuart left SJdS last week, needing to return to Australia for family reasons. He will always be remembered for his permanent smile, great sense of humor, ever-present Guatemalan bag, and the new scar on his head. Stuart leaves us with a new name for the rock at Maderas Beach which he head-planted while surfing. It is now affectionately known as, “Stuart’s Rock”.

Grandfather and Grandson Bond under Sail

Ray Jackson of Secret Cove and grandson Corey, of numerous “secret” surf spots around SJdS have finally finished their more than one thousand mile journey in the 34 foot sailboat the “DonaLyn”. Sailing for two months last year, the team made it from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to the Rio Dulce in Guatemala where the boat was moored for a year while they returned home to San Juan del Sur.

This July they finished the trip, having the boat trucked over to Puerto Quetzal in,
Guatemala, on the Pacific Coast, and sailing the 300 miles south. Along the way they saw turtles and dolphins and had to deal with lightening storms, a 50-knot gale and the typical engine problems.

Ray says of his grandson, ¨He’s a good crewman with a sense of sea and wind which helps me with the navigation. He also makes the best eggs in town¨!

Corey says of his grandfather, ¨The best part of sailing with him is all of the stories he’s got.”
