The two American teams came to Nicaragua to play volleyball, see some sights and to bring clothes and school supplies from the U.S. to help the community.

Vanguard’s coach, Paula Weishoff is a 3-time Olympian and considered one of the greatest players ever to play the game. Concordia’s coach, Erikka Gulbranson coached the USA Youth National Team at World Championships in Macau a few years back.

The teams came down to Nicaragua on the 3rd of August and had previously played in a tournament in Managua with the National Teams from Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua before travelling to SJDS for a couple of friendly games against the Nicaraguan National Team. Both University teams usually compete in the NAIA Division in the States.

Additionally, they have raised money to donate to the Jean Brugger Foundation School Uniform Program and the stove and water filter programs in town through Don Wilson and Juan Manuel Caldera of NiCad.

Tim Kelly of Bring It Promotions was the tour promoter. He hopes to have more volleyball (and other sports) teams come to Nicaragua in the future. If he can continue bringing this caliber of athletes down, we are all in for a treat.
